Corrective Jaw Surgery

Corrective Jaw Surgery

Corrective jaw surgery (also known as orthognathic surgery) is used to correct many different issues ranging from misaligned jaws to skeletal irregularities. On top of the aesthetic benefits, having jaw problems corrected is important to improve function of the mouth.

Corrective jaw surgery is performed by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and is used when regular orthodontic treatment won’t work.

Reasons for orthognathic surgery

  • Tooth Wear:  When pressure is not spread evenly among the teeth due to the top and bottom jaw having misalignment, this causes wear.
  • Chronic Jaw, Muscle Pain & Headache:  Misalignment can force the muscles to behave differently.
  • Loose Teeth:  Due to uneven pressure being repeatedly exerted, teeth may become loose.
  • Tooth Sensitivity:  As teeth become damaged by constant use, the enamel becomes thinner and the nerves are less protected. This lack of protection can lead to sharp pains when hot or cold foods are eaten.
  • Difficulty Swallowing, Chewing, or Biting Food:  Misalignment of the jaws can cause and contribute to all these problems.
